MYOB remains one of the most widely used accounting platforms in Australia, with over 1.2 million businesses relying on it for invoicing, payroll, bank feeds, and compliance reporting. Whether you are on MYOB Business (the cloud product) or MYOB AccountRight (the desktop and hosted version), the platform handles core accounting well.
But MYOB still requires significant manual effort. Entering supplier invoices. Reconciling bank transactions. Chasing receipts. Preparing BAS data. Running payroll. These tasks consume hours every week, and for accounting firms managing multiple clients on MYOB, the workload multiplies across every client file.
AI automation closes the gap between what MYOB can do natively and what your team spends time on manually. It does not replace MYOB. It makes MYOB faster, more accurate, and less dependent on repetitive human effort.
This guide covers five MYOB workflows you can automate with AI today, how each one works in practice, and what kind of time savings to expect. What it does: AI matches bank transactions to invoices, bills, and receipts in MYOB by learning your historical patterns. It handles recurring payments, supplier matches, split transactions, and vague bank descriptions that MYOB's built-in matching rules struggle with.
How FlowWorks implements it: FlowWorks connects to your MYOB bank feeds and builds a matching model trained on your reconciliation history. Over time, it learns which transactions map to which accounts, suppliers, and categories. High-confidence matches are reconciled automatically. Anything uncertain gets flagged with a suggested match for one-click approval.
What it does: AI reads incoming supplier invoices from email, PDF attachments, or scanned documents. It extracts the supplier name, ABN, amounts, line items, due date, and GST component, then creates a draft bill in MYOB. It cross-references against purchase orders and flags mismatches before anything is posted.
How FlowWorks implements it: FlowWorks sets up an AI extraction pipeline that monitors your accounts inbox or document storage. Invoices are parsed in seconds, validated against your MYOB chart of accounts, and pushed in as draft bills. You review and approve. The system handles both MYOB Business (cloud) and MYOB AccountRight (on-premise or hosted) via their respective APIs.
What it does: AI pre-checks your BAS data before lodgement by scanning for common errors: miscoded GST transactions, missing ABNs on supplier invoices over $82.50, inconsistent GST treatment across similar transactions, and unreported taxable supplies. It generates a pre-lodgement summary with flagged issues so your BAS agent or bookkeeper can review with confidence.
How FlowWorks implements it: FlowWorks runs a quarterly (or monthly, if you lodge monthly) audit across your MYOB data. It checks every transaction against ATO rules, flags GST anomalies, and produces a clean summary report. This does not replace your BAS agent. It gives them a verified starting point instead of raw data.
What it does: AI automates the repetitive parts of payroll: pulling timesheet data from tools like Deputy or Tanda, calculating hours and allowances, flagging discrepancies against award rates, and preparing pay runs in MYOB for approval. It handles leave accruals, super calculations, and STP reporting preparation.
How FlowWorks implements it: FlowWorks integrates your rostering or time-tracking tool with MYOB payroll. Timesheet data is pulled automatically, validated against the relevant Modern Award, and staged as a draft pay run. Anomalies like unexpected overtime or missing timesheets are flagged before processing. With Payday Super taking effect in July 2026, this kind of automation becomes even more critical for compliance.
What it does: AI categorises business expenses to the correct MYOB account codes based on the vendor, description, amount, and your historical coding patterns. It handles receipt capture, mileage logs, and corporate card transactions. No more month-end recoding or chasing staff for missing receipts.
How FlowWorks implements it: FlowWorks builds a classification model trained on your existing expense data. New transactions are auto-categorised with a confidence score. The system can also monitor a shared email or folder for receipt images, extract the data via OCR, and match them to the corresponding MYOB transaction. Staff can forward receipts by email and the rest is handled automatically.
MYOB offers both REST APIs and pre-built connectors across major integration platforms. The right tool depends on the complexity of what you are automating.
Best for straightforward automations: syncing contacts between MYOB and your CRM, sending Slack notifications when invoices are paid, or creating MYOB transactions from form submissions. Quick to set up, no code required, and reliable for structured workflows.
For more complex workflows that involve conditional logic, AI processing steps, or sensitive data that should not leave your infrastructure. n8n gives full control over the workflow, supports custom code nodes, and integrates with AI models for tasks like invoice parsing and categorisation. It is the strongest option for MYOB automation projects that require advanced logic.
For enterprise-grade requirements or highly specific logic that no-code tools cannot handle. Direct API integration gives full access to MYOB's capabilities, including advanced features like journal entries, inventory management, and multi-currency support. This approach is more involved to build but offers maximum flexibility and performance.
Both products support AI automation, but there are practical differences worth understanding.
MYOB Business is cloud-native, which makes API integration straightforward. It uses OAuth 2.0 authentication, offers webhooks for real-time triggers, and is generally easier to connect to automation platforms. Most no-code tools (Zapier, Make) have direct MYOB Business connectors.
MYOB AccountRight can be hosted in the cloud or run locally. Cloud-hosted AccountRight files are accessible via API, similar to MYOB Business. Locally hosted files require a different approach, typically involving the AccountRight API running on the local network. Automation is absolutely possible with AccountRight, but the setup can require additional configuration depending on your hosting arrangement.
Every MYOB setup is different, so the best first step is a short conversation. We will look at your current workflows, identify the highest-impact automation opportunities, and give you a clear picture of what is possible and what it will cost.
Most clients see ROI within the first month. No lock-in contracts, no bloated scope. Just automations that save you real time. For more on what AI automation can do for accounting practices, read our complete guide to AI automation in Australia.
